When we refret a guitar, we true the board first with the PLEK - leveling the board flat and creating a consistent radius. This allows for the frets to seat properly and minimizes how much the new frets need to be leveled. This particular Les Paul had an extremely uneven fretboard, and we needed to remove around .25mm-.3mm in some areas (yes, that’s a lot). The inlays, however, were less than .5mm thick, and we didn’t want to risk ruining them, so we carefully removed them before the leveling process, and then will reinstall them later. This is super tedious, but a good guitar tech’s work should be invisible, so we’re wiling to put in the time to make it right.

When we refret a guitar, we true the board first with the PLEK - leveling the board flat and creating a consistent radius. This allows for the frets to seat properly and minimizes how much the new frets need to be leveled. This particular Les Paul had an extremely uneven fretboard, and we needed to remove around .25mm-.3mm in some areas (yes, that’s a lot). The inlays, however, were less than .5mm thick, and we didn’t want to risk ruining them, so we carefully removed them before the leveling process, and then will reinstall them later. This 70s Fender Strat needed a fair bit of work to get it all straightened out. It had been refretted and refinished at least twice previously. The frets were cooked but the board was also all over the place. So the customer decided to have it evened out to a 9.5 inch radius while we were planing the board. We refinished the fingerboard but were still able to retain the underlying colouring and marks to a degree. After it came out of the PLEK from having its fret dress and a new bone nut cut, it was time to manually remove the overspray on the frets and polish the hell out of it all.
