Here’s a few shots of the process of cutting a new bone nut in the PLEK and then final shaping and polishing by hand. First photo shows the new blank installed before cutting and then a couple shots of how it looks after the PLEK has rough cut the profile. At this stage the slot widths, depths and angle over the nut have been cut. I then shape the nut to the profile I like with a file and polish it up with several grits of abrasives. Here’s a part of our epoxy coating process that is rarely seen. After we’ve poured the epoxy on the fretboard and let it sit for a few days, we level the surface with our trusty PLEK machine. One can’t simply just slap some epoxy on a bass and expect it to play well - the board needs to be trued so that all the notes ring out perfectly. Yes, this creates a LOT more work for ourselves polishing the epoxy back to look like glass, but it plays so nice when it’s done. Muah!
